Exmouth has once again been hit by heavy rain, just days after the town in Western Australia’s Pilbara region was declared a natural disaster zone. A low pressure system and an associated rain band is currently hitting north-western parts of the state. A similar system caused flooding in Exmouth last weekend, damaging homes, camp grounds and businesses. There are reports that 76 millimetres of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours. Heavy rain overnight forced the closure of the Minilya-Exmouth Road, between Burkett Road and the town site.
The road re-opened today, although the authorities advised motorists to proceed with caution. Several other streets in town and in Cape Range National Park remain closed, as well as the town’s rubbish tip and swimming pool. Flights in and out of Learmonth airport were cancelled this morning after screening and security staff were prevented from getting to the airport because of damage to the Minilya-Exmouth Road. A Qantas flight which landed at Learmonth this morning was forced to return to Perth because there was no staff available on the ground.
